Mark Knopfler in Rio : a tribute to my guitar hero 64th birthday

          April 5, 2001

I was very nervous and anxious. I ate too much chocolate and ice cream.  Finally, my guitar hero was going to play in Rio de Janeiro. As soon as my brother came home, he, I and my maid went to Mark concert venue.
I will never forget the moment I saw Mark’s precious and magic guitars near the stage. My seat was far from the stage. But I was glad and nervous because I was going to see Mark playing live for the first time. I realized that my teenage dream was about to come true.
When the concert begun and Mark started playing Calling Elvis, my heart was beating fast. But when the band played Walk of live, my favourite Dire Straits song, it was a big thrill to me. I thought I was going to cry. My eyes were full of tears. I had to sing along with Mark and the crowd to try to calm down.
Who’s Your Baby Now, Rudiger, What It Is and Sailing to Philadelphia are very special songs and it was so nice to listen to them. I shouted when Mark started playing every song.
Mark played Romeo and Juliet beautifully as usual. When Knopfler played Sultans of Swing I and the crowd went very very crazy. We were amazed! It was a fascinating and magical moment I will never forget even when I am an old lady! I was almost voiceless at this time. It was the concert peak.
The new song Pyroman astonished everybody. It was a thrill to listen to the epic and wonderful Telegraph Road.
Knopfler played a different Money for Nothing version, which surprised everybody. Brothers in Arms is always a beautiful, sad and touching song. If I am not mistaken, Mark ended the concert with Wag the Dog.
The crowd shouted: “Knopfler! Knopfler! Knopfler!”
I was very excited. I was in heaven. Mark’s concert in Rio was my 25th birthday present. I will never forget the best night of my live. Thank you for having taken me to Knopfler concert in Rio de Janeiro, my brother!

Thank you very very very much for your wonderful songs and this fantastic concert in Rio, Mark Knopfler. I hope you can come back to Brazil next time.  Happy Birthday and Best Wishes!

How my passion for Dire Straits music has begun

In the 1980s, my older brother listened to Queen, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson and other great artists.
In 1987, when I was eleven years old, he wisely recommended me:
‘’Listen to this tape. It’s very good”.
That day my life has changed forever. I looked at the light blue cover with a beautiful silver guitar (Later I have known that this was a steel guitar). I had no idea that this beautiful blue sky would give me so much joy.
“I am going to listen to it now!”
When I pressed the play key something magical happened.
“I have already listened to this song! What a cool song! What is this wonderful band? ” I didn’t understand a word of English language at that time, but I loved the melody of So Far Away.
In the next track, the hallucinating guitar and the powerful drums impressed me.
“Great! Who is this drummer? Who is this fantastic guitar player? ” Money for nothing infected me by the curiosity and fascination virus.
I started dancing in the enthusiastic rhythm of Walk of Life, which is my favourite Dire Straits song ever. Mark, John, Alan, Guy, Terry (Omar Hakin), and Jack has caught me with their perfect sound. A lifetime passion has begun. But still there have been a lot of great things to find out in the brilliant road of the best British rock band I have ever seen in my life. When my English became fluent years later I found out that the lyrics are about a musician who wants to be successful.
I loved the saxophone in Your Latest Trick. It’s magical and sensual.
I was amazed by Why worry. I loved the piano, the guitar, the melody and the lyrics. Everything is perfect in that song. It’s my Knopfler mantra. I have used it many times when I am nervous or to calm down my explosive temper. I have listened to this song so many times that I almost erased the tape. I had to buy another copy of Brothers in Arms because I have to listen to my favourite record very often.
I was intrigued by Ride across the River funny melody which fits the lyrics about a group of guerrillas.
The Man’s Too Strong impressed me with the hallucinating guitar and drums. The lyrics are a thief’s confession having an ironic tone.
In One World Mark’s fantastic guitar makes me want to jump from my wheelchair. But all I can do is to dance with my arms and my head to enjoy my favourite record.
In the title track Brothers in Arms Mark makes the guitar cry. It’s one of the most poetic Knopfler lyrics. It’s such a beautiful hymn against violence and war and it’s the Dire Straits song which always touches me in the bottom of my soul. Brothers in Arms closes the album brilliantly.
There was no Google or you tube at that time and I became addicted to listening to the record. The next year the collection of hits Money for nothing was released . Brazilian TV programs started to recall Dire Straits history. The old Brazilian channel TV Manchete broadcast one of the Brothers in Arms tour Dire Straits concerts in Wembley and I could see the band for the first time.  I can’t remember exactly in which year it has happened. But I got very crazy and hypnotised by Mark’s magic guitar, John’s precision on the bass, Terry’s powerful drums, Alan’s brilliance and fine touch on the keyboards, Jack's happiness and competence on the rythm guitar, the soft backing vocals  by John, Jack and Guy, who is also a keyboard player and Chris fantastic saxophone. I was more enchanted by Dire Straits music.
I was so eager to listen to Money for nothing album, so I insisted on my mother on giving me my Christmas present before Christmas Eve in 1988.
She gave me tape and pressed the play key in a hurry. It was another magical moment.
I was striken by Sultans of Swing fantastic guitar solo, Down to Waterline mysterious and poetic guitar solo, the beauty of Portobello Belle live version, Twisting by the Pool swing, the lyricism, the poetry and the spectacular piano and guitars of Tunnel of love, the delicacy of Romeo and Juliet, the mysterious and jeauousy atmosphere of Where Do You Think You're Going, the different and enchanting sound of Private Investigations in which Mark, John and Alan show such a big talent, the awesome melody, guitar and piano and the epic lyrics of Telegraph Road.  I understood the meaning of the lyrics of these songs little by little, as my English language studies have gotten advanced. It was the first time I listened to these classic Dire Straits songs. I also enjoyed the happiness in Walk of Life and Money for Nothing and the beautiful Brothers in arms, which already have been running in my veins. In Money for nothing insert I found out the names of the albums names of the band lead by Mark Knopfler and the lyrics of the songs, which I had been deciphering with the help from my English teachers.
In 1991 I was given all this wonderful band discography as my 15th birthday present. I dived deeply in Dire Straits world. The albums Brothers in Arms and Money for Nothing are milestones in my life and have changed it forever. The fever they have provoked on me is good and cureless. It makes my live happier. Listening to Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler music gives me joy, peace and makes me want to visit the UK. If I don’t listen to Dire Straits, I will be more stressed than I usually am. When I am tense, I fall back on Knopfler. Only this guitar genius music calms me down. Because of that, I pay a deserved tribute to Dire Straits.
I intend to analyse  each  Dire Straits album in my blog whenever I can.

— Vou escutar agora!
Coloquei a fita no som e algo mágico aconteceu.
— Caramba! Que baterista é esse? Que guitarrista fantástico é esse? Money for nothing me contagiou com o vírus do fascínio e da curiosidade.
Adorei o sax de Your latest trick! Mágico e sensual!
Why Worry me desconcertou! Amei o piano, o violão, a melodia, a letra! Tudo perfeito!
The man’s too strong me impressionou pelo violão e bateria alucinante.
Os álbuns Brothers in arms e Money for nothing me marcaram muito e mudaram minha vida para sempre.

Privateering
(Mark Knopfler)

Yon’s my privateer

See how trim she lies

To every man a lucky hand

And every man a prize

I live to ride the ocean

The mighty world around

To take a little plunder

And to hear the cannon sound

To lay with pretty women

To drink Madeira wine

To hear the rollers thunder

On a shore that isn’t mine

Privateering we will go

Privateering, yo ho hoho

Privateering we will go

Yo ho ho, yo ho ho

The people on your man o’ war

Are treated worse than scum

I’m no flogging captain

And by God I’ve sailed with some

Come with me to Barbary

We’ll ply there up and down

Not quite exactly

In the service of the Crown

To lay with pretty women

To drink Madeira wine

To hear the rollers thunder

On a shore that isn’t mine

Privateering we will go

Privateering, yo ho hoho

Privateering we will go

Yo ho ho, yo ho ho

Look’ee there’s my privateer

She’s small but she can sting

Licensed to take prizes

With a letter from the King

I love the streets and taverns

Of a pretty foreign town

Tip my hat to the dark-eyed ladies

As we sally up and down

To lay with pretty women

To drink Madeira wine

To hear the rollers thunder

On a shore that isn’t mine

Privateering we will go

Privateering, yo ho hoho

Privateering we will go

Yo ho ho, yo ho ho

Britannia needs her privateers

Each time she goes to war

Death to all her enemies

Though prizes matter more

Come with me to Barbary

We’ll ply there up and down

Not quite exactly

In the service of the Crown

To lay with pretty women

To drink Madeira wine

To hear the rollers thunder

On a shore that isn’t mine

Privateering we will go

Privateering, yo ho hoho

Privateering we will go

Yo ho ho, yo ho ho

Corsear

Esse é minha nave corsária

Veja como está em boas condições
Pra cada homem  um trabalho de sorte

E para todo homem uma presa

Vivo para viajar no mar

Pela imensidão do mundo

Para pilhar um pouco

E ouvir o som do canhão

Dormir com mulheres bonitas

Beber o vinho da Ilha da Madeira

Ouvir as ondas altas arrebentarem

No litoral que não é o meu

Corsear lá vamos nós

Corsear yo ho hoho

Corsear lá vamos nós

Corsear yo ho hoho

Ouvir as ondas altas arrebentarem

No litoral que não é o meu

Corsear lá vamos nós

Corsear yo ho hoho

Corsear lá vamos nós

Corsear yo ho hoho

Esse é minha nave corsária

Ela é pequena, mas pode lesar

Tem licença para pegar presas

Com uma carta do Rei

Amo as ruas e tavernas

Ouvir as ondas altas arrebentarem

No litoral que não é o meu

Corsear lá vamos nós

Corsear yo ho hoho

Corsear lá vamos nós

Corsear yo ho hoho

A Grã Bretanha precisa de naves corsárias

Toda vez que entra em guerra

Morte a todos os inimigos

Embora as presas importem mais

Vem comigo para a Bárbária

Vamos pilhar por toda a parte

Não exatamente

A serviço da Coroa

Para dormir com mulheres bonitas

Beber o vinho da Ilha da Madeira

Ouvir as ondas altas arrebentarem

No litoral que não é o meu

Corsear lá vamos nós

Corsear yo ho hoho

Corsear lá vamos nós

Corsear yo ho hoho

2) A atividade do corso (pirataria)

A tradução é minha.

Redbud tree

(Mark Knopfler)

Hunted down, I came upon

A place of ferns and grass

Gathered to a redbud tree

And now their footsteps pass

Where I crouch in dread

Discovery my certain death

Her leaves reaching for my head

As I suspend my breath

Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me

Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me

Those days of fear are gone

Yet I am pledged to her

As to my only one

My lovely protector

Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me

Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me

Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me

Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me

Olaia norte-americana

Perseguido, cheguei a

Um lugar com samambaia. e grama

Protegido por uma olaia norte-americana

E agora o som dos passos passou

Onde me agachei com pavor

A descoberta seria minha morte certa

As folhas dela batendo na minha cabeça

Quando eu prendi a respiração

Olaia norte-americana, me abrigue, me abrigue

Olaia norte-americana, me abrigue, me abrigue

Esses dias de medo se foram

Mas eu garanto que ela é

Minha única

Adorável protetora

Olaia norte-americana, me abrigue, me abrigue

Olaia norte-americana, me abrigue, me abrigue

Olaia norte-americana, me abrigue, me abrigue

Olaia norte-americana, me abrigue, me abrigue

Haul Away

(Mark Knopfler)

It was a windless night when you left the ship

You never were a steady bold one

I gave my hand, ah, but you did slip

I’m a living man and you’re a cold one

Haul away, haul away for home

My love’s as fair as a girl can be

My wedding ring is a heavy gold one

Now you lie alone in the deep dark sea

I’m a living man and you’re a cold one

Haul away, haul away for home

The morning brings, Lord, a fresh young breeze

To fill our sails and end the doldrums

Our lucky ship speeds across the sea

I’m a living man and you’re a cold one

Haul away, haul away for home

Agora você jaz no fundo do mar escuro

Get Lucky-Novo álbum do Mark Knopfler

Hard shoulder é bonitinha, assim como The car was one, homenagem de Mark a um piloto.
You can't beat the house é um blues muito legal e interessante.
Piper to end

Músicas como Sultans of swing, Walk of life, Telegraph road, Romeo and Juliet, Money for nothing, Brothers in arms, So far away, Tunnel of love, Wild west end, Lady writer, What it is, Sailling to Philadelphia, Darling Pretty, Punish the monkey, Hill farmer's blues, Boom like that e a nova Get Lucky demonstram o talento e sensibilidade desse artista!
Happy birthday and thanks for all , Mark!
